This small, nocturnal bird is a master of camouflage, its plumage perfectly mimicking the texture and colour of the surrounding tree bark. Native to parts of Central and South America, including Trinidad, the Tropical Screech Owl has adapted remarkably well to the dense mangrove and wetland ecosystems of the Caroni Swamp.
Typically roosting during the day, these owls rely on their exceptional natural camouflage to remain hidden from predators and human observers alike. Spotting one during a guided tour is considered a special highlight for birdwatchers and eco-tourists alike.
While the Scarlet Ibis remains the star attraction at Caroni, the swamp’s biodiversity offers so much more, from countless bird species to reptiles, crabs, and mangrove forests teeming with life.
