The Cattle Egret is a familiar sight across Tobago today, but it’s actually a world traveller. Originally from Africa, Europe, and Asia, this clever bird made its way across the Atlantic in the late 1800s, eventually settling throughout the Caribbean, including right here in Tobago.
You’ll often spot it in open fields, calmly walking alongside cattle or other animals, catching insects stirred up by their movement. This unique behaviour is exactly how it got its name. Its ability to adapt so easily is what helped it thrive on the island.
Now, the cattle egret is part of Tobago’s everyday landscape, simple, graceful, and a perfect example of nature finding its way.
