Hidden in the lush hills of Trinidad’s Arima Valley stands a place where science, nature, and history quietly shaped the Caribbean’s global importance.
This historic estate is closely tied to the legacy of Asa Wright, whose vision in 1946 transformed Spring Hill into a sanctuary for birdlife, research, and conservation. What began as a private home soon evolved into a meeting point for naturalists, researchers, and explorers from around the world.
Among those connected to this legacy was William Beebe (1877–1962), a pioneering scientist whose work ranged from rainforest ecology to record-breaking deep-sea exploration. In the nearby valley, Beebe established the Simla Tropical Research Station, advancing global understanding of tropical biodiversity right here in Trinidad.
Today, this heritage lives on through the Asa Wright Nature Centre, one of the Caribbean’s most respected eco-tourism and research destinations.
This is more than a historic site; it’s where Trinidad helped shape the world’s understanding of nature.
