Five-finger fruit, also known as carambola or star fruit, is a tropical fruit native to Southeast Asia. Still, it has been cultivated throughout the Caribbean, including Tobago, for a long time. The fruit got its local name “five fingers” because of its unique star-like shape when cut crosswise. Introduced to the region centuries ago through trade, it quickly became a favourite for its sweet-tart flavour and versatility. In Tobago, five-finger fruit is enjoyed fresh, in juices, jams, and preserves, and is often found in home gardens across the island.
