The largest tern in Trinidad and Tobago, this striking seabird is a true coastal specialist. With its almost entirely white plumage, a bold black cap during the breeding season, and a prominent orange-red bill paired with black legs, the Royal Tern is impossible to miss.
Breeding primarily occurs on small offshore islets, such as the Sisters Rocks off Tobago, while many others visit from northern regions during the winter months. In Trinidad, they are most commonly seen along the sheltered west coast, and in Tobago, between Crown Point and Charlotteville, especially around Plymouth and Buccoo.
Outside the breeding season, adults lose most of the black on their crest, giving them a softer, elegant appearance. Locating colonies can be challenging, making sightings of these magnificent birds a special treat for birdwatchers and nature lovers alike.
