Meet the Purple Gallinule
( Porphyrula martinica )
If you wander through Tobago’s wetlands, you might spot this jewel of the marsh. Often called the “Water-hen,” the Purple Gallinule is anything but ordinary. With its deep blue plumage, bright red bill topped with a pale blue shield, striking white tail, and long yellow legs, it’s one of the most colourful birds you’ll encounter on the island.
Perfectly adapted to life among lilies and floating plants, this shy bird prefers walking and climbing to flying. Listen closely and you may hear its clucks, squawks, and cackles echoing from the reeds. During nesting season, the parents lead their downy chicks through the marsh, a heartwarming sight for birdwatchers and nature lovers alike.
Another reason why Tobago is a paradise for birdwatchers and eco-adventurers.
