The Blue-crowned Motmot (Momotus bahamensis), affectionately known in Tobago as the “King of the Woods,” is one of the island’s most striking and beloved forest birds. Endemic to Trinidad and Tobago, it is easily recognized by its vivid blue crown, emerald-green feathers, and distinctive racket-shaped tail.
This shy and solitary bird thrives in the cool, shaded areas of the Main Ridge Forest Reserve, where it contributes to the health of the ecosystem by feeding on insects, small reptiles, and fruits. In doing so, it plays a key role in natural pest control and seed dispersal.
With its majestic appearance and elusive nature, the Blue-crowned Motmot is a symbol of Tobago’s rich biodiversity. Its presence is a highlight for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts, making it a unique attraction within the island’s thriving eco-tourism landscape.
